Whether you’re called to environmental, social, or food justice we have projects we’d love for you to be involved with.
Our Positions:
RSA Positions.
Two Rhodes students can apply to serve as the Rhodes Student Associates to the Archaeology department through the Rhodes Students Associate Program. In these positions, students serve as research assistants to Dr. Kasper and teaching assistants at the annual summer field schools. Click here for more information.
Ames Fellowship.
If you are interested in agriculture and/or historical research, a partnership with Ames Plantation could be a great opportunity. In the past, Rhodes students have worked with Jamie Evans at Ames Plantation to further research various antebellum plantations on the land base. A fellowship with Ames could be constructed to center around the interest areas of the students involved.
Forestry Fellowships.
Two Rhodes students can apply to serve as the Forestry Fellows for a given school year. The fellows complete research with the Overton Park Conservancy in the Old Forest located across the street from Rhodes College’s campus. You can learn more about the Overton Park Conservancy here.
Internships.
We have relationships with the following groups which may feature internships you’re interested in:
275 Food Project, Clean Memphis, Memphis River Parks Partnership, Memphis Tilth, Overton Park Conservancy, Project Green Fork, Shelby Farms Conservancy, Sierra Club Memphis, The Compost Fairy, Wolf River Conservancy
Volunteer Opportunities:
Community Archaeology Days.
We annually conduct Community Archaeology days throughout our annual summer field schools. These days are open to community members of all ages, and allow individuals to get an inside look at the archaeological work that we conduct at Ames Plantation.
OPC Community Days.
If you are looking to get involved with the Overton Park Conservancy and support their mission, there are many ways to get involved! They have organizational events, special event volunteer need, and volunteer work days and they are always looking for people to help out. If you’re interested in volunteering contact the conservancy at info@overtonpark.org or 901-214-5450.
Meeman Classes.
As a part of the Meeman Center for Lifelong Learning, we have developed a course for adults who are interested in archaeological work. This course will be offered again beginning in March 2021, and offers an archaeological perspective on the study of slavery in the American South - with an opportunity to excavate at the Ames Plantation site. Email kasperk@rhodes.edu if interested.
